What didn’t we plant here? Plants that use too much water!
An expansive hill was planted to create a tapestry of color. Anchored by erosion control swaths of groundcovers, accent specimens like Old Man Peruvian Cactus or Blue Glow and Blue Flame Agaves assist in keeping the hillside from slipping down during deluges. The client wanted ice-plant but when educated about how ineffective it is while feeding the squirrel population, colorful, more effective ground covers were chosen.
Hardscape included Belgard pavers with a formal border to match the elevated space. Seatwalls were built into the retaining wall and placed at the side yard. While we were hoping to install a no mow lawn, the client desired turf to save on water rations. This turf area has been a success for the grandkids to ride trikes and play ball.
A breakfast nook was created with a xeriscape planting bed. The next stages planned include a pergola over the breakfast nook, an outdoor grill with a pergola and dining area adjacent the home. Entire yard was double caged to exclude ground squirrels. Gas and electrical were pre-plumbed so that when the budget is ready, no demolition damage will occur. Drainage and installing a gentle slope in the hardscape prevented flooding, which was a previous issue at the site.
